Description of the plant
Passionflower is a climbing ornamental plant native to the tropical and subtropical areas of Central and South America; today it is also cultivated in our regions and in many countries with a temperate-warm climate. Perennial herbaceous plant with a climbing and lianous habit (5-6 m.) The stem abundantly branched, is thin, green in young specimens, covered with bark in old subjects.
The leaves are alternate, lanceolate, in the armpits there are anchoring organs, shaped like tendrils.
The flowers are normally hermaphroditic, axillary and solitary, have three bracts of various shapes, sometimes colored and equipped with nectariferous glands, the calyx more or less elongated, with 5 sepals, 5 petals sometimes absent; a crown of filaments is normally present.
The fruits are generally ovoid or elongated berries, covered by a slight integument that, when ripe, is colored yellow, inside the fruit there is a gelatinous pulp (arillo) that contains small seeds of flattened shape, heart-shaped, dark in color, leathery and wrinkled.
How to prepare the mother tincture of passionflower
The“drug”(used part) corresponds to the leaves and aerial parts, harvested in the spring. The fresh plant is used, as it is dry and loses most of its properties. The mother tincture of passionflower is prepared with drug weight ratio: solvent of 1:10 and alcohol content of65% vol.
Utilization
The mother tinctures have no contraindications except those of the plant itself, diluted in a little water can be given to everyone, the alcohol contained in them is thus diluted, so it is harmless. Concomitant use of passionflower and synthetic sedatives or tranquilizers can potentiate the side and unwanted effects of medications. Contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation.
