Homeopathy for Dogs

How do you administer homeopathic remedies to your dog?

Homeopathic remedies come in a variety of dosage forms. The best-known form is probably the “sugar globules”. Furthermore, there are homeopathic remedies in the form of orodispersible tablets and dilution (drops). The simplest way to administer a homeopathic remedy to dogs is in globule form. You simply put the globules in the lips of the dog. If you have selected the right remedy for your dog, it can be observed again and again that the dog has a real desire for the globules. If you are not sure or if the course of the disease is very severe, you should consult an alternative animal practitioner or veterinarian despite your prior knowledge.

With homeopathy we have the opportunity to help our dogs in a gentle way.

Nowadays it is becoming more and more natural to treat your dog homeopathically, regardless of whether it is suffering from illness, behavioral problems or other ailments.

As in the human area, the owner must be able to observe and describe the history of the disease, the previous history, but also the behavior and characteristics of his dog.

Today we have a close relationship with our dogs. This is how we humans can accurately describe our dogs. Over time, many dog owners know exactly what is wrong with their four-legged friend and what is good for them. Homeopathy gives us the chance to do something good for our animals in a gentle way.

Today, homeopathy for dogs is a natural part of the spectrum of treating veterinarians and alternative animal practitioners. More and more dog owners want to use natural means to heal and treat their four-legged friends as gently as possible. Homeopathy uses the same starting materials, similar potencies and dosage instructions as formulated over 200 years ago (for the first time in 1796) by the inventor of homeopathy. Incidentally, Hahnemann also took care of animal patients, but only marginally.

How does homeopathy for dogs work?

Homeopathy for dogs works according to the proven principles of homeopathic healing methods to cure like with like (“similia similibus curentur”). This means that a remedy that would normally cause the symptoms the animal is currently suffering from can, when highly diluted (potentiated), cause the dog to heal. This has been working for people for 200 years. In the meantime, pet owners and veterinarians, farmers and alternative animal practitioners have discovered homeopathy for a wide variety of animal species, including homeopathy for dogs. It works gently, quickly and safely, consists of natural raw materials (usually plants and minerals) and has no side effects. Globules, the “pills” of homeopathy, use lactose as a carrier for the homeopathic active ingredients, which is very well accepted by dogs. Dog owners can obtain most of these globules without a prescription from pharmacies or online from reliable suppliers. Animal naturopaths and homeopathic veterinarians also prescribe them. Some dog owners already have experience in self-medicating their pets, but we can also give some recommendations for the most important homeopathic remedies for dogs. Experienced therapists can, of course, deviate from these recommendations based on the dog’s medical history. During this anamnesis, the alternative practitioner or homeopathic veterinarian asks about the clinical picture, the history and the character of the dog in order to derive the correct recommendation and dosage of homeopathic remedies for dogs. In some cases, homeopaths come to astonishing findings with animals – as with humans – based on their anamnesis, which may well deviate from what the animal owner personally thought. Since homeopathy for dogs has been very successful in the meantime, you can trust the therapist if you have a good feeling about his competence.

Proper use of homeopathy for dogs

With homeopathic remedies, there are the application forms of globules (small lactose tablets containing the homeopathic remedy), drops and dilutions (liquid succussed substances). All of these substances act via the oral mucosa and are either pushed into the cheek pouch or sucked on the tongue by humans, i.e. taken in by dogs via the mouth and lips. The best time for this is half an hour after or before a meal. There are regulations for the dosage and potentiation for each application, which are derived from the clinical picture and the constitution of the patient, which in dogs always involves a question of body weight. It is therefore difficult to give general dosage guidelines for dogs. The homeopathic remedies given below are therefore suggested without a specific dosage. Rather, users should observe the following general rules for homeopathic remedies for dogs:

  • Per-acute illnesses, including shock and bleeding or colicky pain can be alleviated with administration of the drug at intervals of 5/10/20 and 30 minutes.
  • Acute illnesses such as fever, inflammation and diarrhea require administration two to four times a day.
  • In subacute diseases, the drugs are given one to three times a day.
  • Chronic diseases alleviate homeopathic remedies with one or two daily doses.
  • Chronic skin diseases that are cured with high potencies are relieved with doses three to six weeks apart.
  • Behavioral disorders in dogs such as fear, skittishness or jealousy should first be treated with a daily dose of 30X, after the strongest symptoms have subsided with one or two doses per week.

One of the basic rules for homeopathic medicines is that the low potencies (up to D12 or C12) should be used in acute illnesses. These potencies are generally suitable for self-medication. Use high potencies from D30 or C30 for chronic diseases. This is where the advice of a therapist is needed.

Dosage of homeopathic remedies for dogs

The globules, drops or dilutions are given in the drinking water or in the lips. Dilutions can contain up to 70% alcohol by volume. Medium-sized dogs are given five to eight drops of Dilution, or five globules, or one tablet, or a pinch of trituration, which is made by compressing triturated tablets. Large breed dogs are given eight granules or ten drops of Dilution. Puppies and small dogs are given half or quarter doses. In general, the medication should be reduced when the condition improves and discontinued after recovery. It is important to note the initial reaction, i.e. an aggravation of the condition after the first intake. This is a sign that the drug is working well and is therefore harmless, but it is recommended to stop taking it for the time being.
