Centella mother tincture: preparation, properties, benefits and use

Properties of centella mother tincture

Centella asiatica leaves contain triterpene  saponins (asiaticoside, osiasiaticoside, bramoside, centelloside), essential oil, flavonoidsphytosterolstanninsmineral salts and sugars.

These active ingredients give the plant the ability to stimulate fibroblasts, in their collagen synthesis activity, which is essential for the health of various tissues, such as the dermisconnective tissue and blood vessels

For internal usecentella mother tincture is used to improve the connective structure of the perivascular sheath and thus counteract the hardening of the venous walls (sclerosis) with the result of  facilitating blood flow. 

The hydroalcoholic extract of the plant is used to protect and strengthen the circulatory system and in the treatment of symptoms of venous insufficiency such as heaviness in the legs, cramps, varicose veinsedema in the lower limbscapillary fragility, cellulite. 

Both for internal and external use, the mother tincture of centella performs a healing and re- epithelizing action, for this reason it is used to accelerate the healing of woundsskin lesions and first and second degree burns, bedsores, psoriasis, dermatosis, eczema varicos and and arterial ulcers.


Description of the plant

Centella is native to India and Madagascar, it is cultivated in China, India, Africa, South America. It grows in humid and shady places, typically along streams or on swampy soil.

Perennial herbaceous plant, has a creeping stem and spreads thanks to its adventitious roots. The leaves with a long petiole arranged in rosettes of 4 or 5, are orbicular or reniform, gray-green in color.

The purplish flowers with reddish hues appear in the axils of the leaves, are gathered in small umbels.


How to prepare the mother tincture of centella

The “drug” (part used) corresponds to the leaves collected all year roundThe fresh plant is used, as it loses most of its properties when dried. 

Centella mother tincture is prepared with a drug: solvent weight ratio of 1:10 and an alcohol content of 55% vol


Usage

The mother tinctures have no contraindications other than those of the plant itself, diluted in a little water they can be administered to everyone, the alcohol contained in them is thus diluted, so it is harmless. 

When taking centella-based preparations it is good to limit direct exposure to sunlight as photosensitization can occur.

Internal use: 30 drops in a little water three times a day before meals.

External use: a 5% ointment of centella hydroalcoholic solution is recommended. The most effective treatment is associated with internal use, external application.
