Properties of fennel mother tincture
Fennel is known above all for its digestive properties, but it is generally an ally of the entire gastrointestinal system. In fact, it has the ability to avoid the formation of intestinal gas and contains anethole, a substance capable of acting on painful abdominal contractions.
Fennel also has purifying properties, in particular affecting the liver and blood, and anti-inflammatory power.
It is mainly composed of water; among the minerals the most present is potassium; it contains vitamin A, vitamin C and some B vitamins. It is fairly rich in flavonoids.
The mother tincture of fennel makes the properties of the plant its own: it stimulates gastrointestinal, stomachic, carminative, antispasmodic, galactogogue, secretolytic mobility. It has an aromatic flavor, warm, dry and warming notes.
Description of the plant
Fennel is perhaps one of the most common vegetables on the tables of the Mediterranean area. The best climate for its cultivation is temperate, but more tending to hot than cold, it grows in its spontaneous form from the sea to the submontane region.
In Italy it is grown more or less everywhere, especially in the Center and South, where it is widely used at the end of a meal, to promote digestion. There is also a variety of wild fennel. The fruits are harvested in August-September by cutting the umbrellas which are tied in bunches and dried in the shade.
How to prepare the mother tincture of fennel
Fennel tincture is a hydroalcoholic preparation obtained by cold maceration in a hydroalcoholic solvent with a suitable strength of 25% dry seeds.
Usage
The traditional uses of the mother tincture of fennel are: bad and difficult digestion, halitosis, loss of appetite, aerophagia, meteorism, hiccups, abdominal pain, mild intestinal colic in children, insomnia, difficult milk supply, inflammation of the upper airways.
Generally we recommend 25 drops in a little hot water before main meals or after meals, as a digestive. 30-40 drops in a little hot water or other sweetened drink as desired as a carminative or sedative for abdominal colic, to be taken as needed.
In children over 4 years, halve the doses, in infants and children up to 4 years do not give more than 5 drops that will be diluted in the bottle or in a little hot water or chamomile.
It should not be taken for long periods. If gastrointestinal inflammation is found it is necessary to discontinue administration. Pure essence is not used in children. In any case, before administration, it is always recommended to consult a doctor, specialist or expert.
