An abscess is a type of large pus-filled pimple. It is a cavity in the tissue that is filled with pus. The body encapsulates the pus-filled cavity to prevent further spread of the infection. Colloquially, an abscess is also called a boil.

Symptoms
Abscesses can appear on different parts of the body. Internal organs can be affected, but most often abscesses are located just under the skin. The affected area of skin is swollen, reddened and painful to the touch. Sometimes the bump of pus lying under the skin can be recognized by a whitish-yellowish color. The symptoms are similar to those of a pus pimple. However, a larger area of skin is affected and the redness, swelling and pain are more pronounced than with a pimple. Sometimes an abscess can also cause fever, headache, body aches and fatigue.
An abscess is usually very painful, leading patients to be tempted to pinch or open the abscess with a variety of things. Doing this can make the infection worse. Therefore, an abscess should always be treated by a doctor. In the early stages, special ointments and homeopathic remedies can be used to relieve the symptoms.
Causes of abscesses
In most cases, bacteria are the cause of the infection. These get into the tissue via the smallest skin injuries and trigger an infection there. The body reacts to the inflammation with defense mechanisms. In the course of the immune reaction, pus is formed. This consists of the bacteria, dead tissue remains and defense cells. The body forms a capsule around the pus sac to prevent further spread.
Beneficial to abscesses:
- Chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (e.g. Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis)
- diabetes mellitus
- Skin injuries or previously damaged skin (e.g. neurodermatitis, psoriasis)
- Lack of hygiene
- Chafing clothes
- immunodeficiency
In rare cases, an abscess can develop after an injection without first disinfecting the injection site. Doctors then speak of a syringe abscess.
Treatment
In the early stages, homeopathic remedies can be used to relieve the symptoms. In the case of a pronounced abscess, however, it must be opened by a doctor. Wound healing can take several weeks.
