Coconut oil for plaque, gingivitis and bad breath

Although you can prepare this remedy with any vegetable oil, we advise you to rinse with coconut oil, in order to also prevent gingivitis and bad breath and prevent the proliferation of bacteria.

Oral problems are widespread among the entire population and do not always derive from poor hygiene. Sometimes, in fact, they result from diseases, allergic reactions or  bacterial proliferation. To prevent many of these ailments, you can rinse with coconut oil.

Many try to prevent and combat these problems with the use of disinfectant mouthwashes that promise to minimize the presence of pathogens.

However, alternative medicine offers an ancient Ayurveda remedy that helps disinfect the mouth and improve oral health.

It is a practice known as “oil pulling”, which in Italian can be translated as “rinsing with vegetable oils”.

It consists of applying oils with antibacterial properties that aim to eliminate plaque, bad breath and other problems such as inflammation of the gums .

How do oil-based oral rinses work?

This mouth health remedy can be made with vegetable oils such as sesame, sunflower or olive oils.

However, the most effective has been shown to be the wonderful coconut oil. Its fatty acids and antibacterial compounds minimize the presence of microorganisms.

It has been scientifically proven that this biological product is able to destroy the bacterium  Streptococcus mutans , the main cause of dental erosion and other oral discomfort.

Scientific data suggests that its health benefits are due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action.

In this way, just bring a spoonful of product to your mouth and use it to rinse for about 3 or 5 minutes .

What are the benefits of coconut oil rinses?

Coconut oil is edible and has a very pleasant taste. You can also use it to make rinses or as a base to prepare a homemade toothpaste .

Since it is able to eliminate harmful substances present in the mouth, regular use has important benefits that are worth listing.

Prevents diseases of the gums and mouth

Coconut oil contains anti-inflammatory substances useful for the prevention and treatment of gingivitis .

This disease occurs when the immune system tries to attack plaque bacteria, which triggers an inflammatory reaction.

Using coconut oil reduces bacterial residues and alters the environment they need to proliferate more easily.

It also helps fight tooth decay and gum bleeding.

Combats jaw pains

The properties of this edible ingredient strengthen the jaw and prevent infections, inflammation and pain that affect it .

Some people suggest using coconut oil to complement temporomandibular joint treatments.

Fights bad breath

Bad breath is a very shameful problem, as it affects the social life and self – esteem of those who suffer from it.

This disorder depends on the residues and gases emitted by the bacteria that cover the mouth. These bacteria often grow in less accessible areas of the mouth.

Mushing and flossing are the most effective techniques to get rid of this root problem. For this reason, instead of using alcohol based products, you can try this natural oil.

Applying it to the teeth and tongue has been shown to reduce the presence of bacteria and neutralize bad breath .

Whiten your teeth

While it doesn’t work as well as professional methods of whitening your teeth, coconut oil helps eliminate yellow stains that stain the surface of your teeth due to the build-up of plaque and food debris.

Its use for rinses or as a toothpaste helps to clean the teeth and keep the tongue free of that annoying white layer.

How are coconut oil rinses made?

As we have already said, just put a spoonful of this product in your mouth to start the treatment.

alternatively, you can  mix it with some baking soda and apply it like toothpaste .

You must remember that coconut oil solidifies when exposed to colder temperatures. Therefore, we do not recommend  disposing of the remains in the sink after rinsing . The best thing is to throw it in the trash.

Some recommend using this remedy in the morning, on an empty stomach and just before breakfast, although it can actually be used at any time of day .

After use, you can rinse your mouth with warm water to get rid of the greasy sensation.
