The mother tincture of erisimo, expectorant and antiseptic, is useful in the treatment of inflammations of the throat. Let’s find out better.
Properties of the mother tincture of erisimo
The flowering tops of Sisymbrium officinale contain essential oils, sterols, glycosides, glycosinolates (sinigrin, glucococlearin, glucobrassicin), coumarins (umbelliferone, erniaria), flavonoids (campferol, quercitin, isoramnetina). These active ingredients give the plant anti-inflammatory, expectorant and antiseptic activity on the respiratory tract.
The mother tincture of erisimo for internal use is used in the treatment of throat inflammations; in case of aphonia, dysphonia (lowering or momentary loss of the voice) resulting from laryngitis, pharyngitis; hoarseness and cough of various kinds.
Current knowledge tends to attribute these properties to the presence of mucilage with protective action on the mucous membranes, and to sulfur compounds, similar to those of horseradish, with a fluidifying activity of bronchial secretions.
The hydroalcoholic solution of the plant can be used for gargling to soothe dryness or inflammation of the vocal cords of smokers, actors, those who work with the voice, and against sore throats.
Erisimo can also be used in the form of a decoction for the care of our animal friends, and in particular to treat dog and cat laryngitis in the winter.
