The mother tincture of erisimo, expectorant and antiseptic, is useful in the treatment of inflammations of the throat. Let’s find out better.
Properties of the mother tincture of erisimo
The flowering tops of Sisymbrium officinale contain essential oils, sterols, glycosides, glycosinolates (sinigrin, glucococlearin, glucobrassicin), coumarins (umbelliferone, erniaria), flavonoids (campferol, quercitin, isoramnetina). These active ingredients give the plant anti-inflammatory, expectorant and antiseptic activity on the respiratory tract.
The mother tincture of erisimo for internal use is used in the treatment of throat inflammations; in case of aphonia, dysphonia (lowering or momentary loss of the voice) resulting from laryngitis, pharyngitis; hoarseness and cough of various kinds.
Current knowledge tends to attribute these properties to the presence of mucilage with protective action on the mucous membranes, and to sulfur compounds, similar to those of horseradish, with a fluidifying activity of bronchial secretions.
The hydroalcoholic solution of the plant can be used for gargling to soothe dryness or inflammation of the vocal cords of smokers, actors, those who work with the voice, and against sore throats.
Erisimo can also be used in the form of a decoction for the care of our animal friends, and in particular to treat dog and cat laryngitis in the winter.
Erisimo grows in uncultivated land and is common in uncultivated land, along roadsides and near inhabited centers both in the plains and in the mountains. Annual plant with erect (60 cm) and branchy stem.
The basal leaves are petiolate, pinnate, with toothed lobes, while the upper ones are whole and astate. The yellowish flowers have a very modest size and are collected in clusters.
The fruit is an elongated siliqua, which contains about twenty oblong and dark seeds.
The “drug” (part used) corresponds to the flowering plant harvested between May and August. The fresh plant is used, as it loses most of its properties when dried.
The mother tincture of erisimo is prepared with a drug: solvent weight ratio of 1:10 and an alcohol content of 65% vol.
The mother tinctures have no contraindications other than those of the plant itself, diluted in a little water they can be administered to everyone, the alcohol contained in them is thus diluted, so it is harmless. The mother tincture of erisimo is not recommended for children.
Internal Use: 30 – 40 drops, 2 – 3 times a day. The maximum recommended daily dosage is 120 drops.
