Homeopathic medicines for allergic rhinitis

The climatic changes that have occurred in recent decades have led to a progressive increase in the presence of pollen in the air we breathe. In urban areas there has been a simultaneous increase in the concentration of fine particles responsible for the establishment of an inflammatory state of the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract which favors a deeper penetration of circulating pollens within the mucous membranes themselves.
All this has led to a significant increase in allergic diseases of the respiratory tract and in particular allergic rhinitis.

In the prevention and treatment of the symptoms of pollinosis, homeopathic medicines can represent a valid therapeutic opportunity.
Among the advantages, it is good to point out the absence of side effects (such as drowsiness or disturbances in attention), the use of natural substances (minerals, vegetables or animals) and the absence of toxicity, characteristics that make them suitable for all age, even to very young children.

Homeopathic therapy, alone or combined with traditional medicines, can represent a valid help in improving the typical symptoms of pollinosis.

Before the onset of symptoms

Preventive homeopathic treatment must be started at least two months before the expected period of acute manifestations caused by pollen allergy. In this case, homeopathic dilutions of the pollen to which the subject is allergic will be taken. The dosage is 5 granules per day in a 9 CH dilution.

If the subject is allergic to pollen from more than one plant, it is possible to use medicine, whose composition contains pollens (grass, mazzolina, hazelnut, white birch, parietaria, Artemisia, ambrosia) diluted to 30 CH; it is taken about a couple of months before pollination in the dosage of 5 granules, 1-2 times a week.

When symptoms appear

Nasal discharge

If the most annoying symptom experienced by your child is rhinorrhea (nasal discharge), there are several specific homeopathic medicines; it starts with a frequent intake (even every hour) and the frequency of intake is reduced based on the improvement of symptoms;

  • in case of  non-irritating rhinorrhea it may be useful to take 5 granules every hour of  Sabadilla 9 CH .;
  • for clear rhinorrhea it is recommended to take 5 granules of Kalium iodatum 9 CH every hour, useful in case of particular irritation to the nose and eyes;
  • in case of  burning rhinorrhea, 5 granules of Allium cepa 9 CH can be taken every hour;
  • for the “stuffy nose” one of the most suitable medicines is Sticta pulmonaria 9 CH , to be taken every evening;
  • in case of  frequent sneezing, Nux Vomica 9 CH is indicated, 5 granules every hour, possibly associated with Histaminum 9 CH,  at the same dosage;
  • for a  runny nose with burning and sneezing, Allium Cepa 5 CH and Arsenicum Album 9 CH if there is a strong nasal inflammation.

To relieve nasal irritation, use ointment based on Calendula officinalis, Benzoe, Phytolacca decandra, Bryonia and Acidum boricum, to be applied locally morning and evening.

Allergic conjunctivitis

If rhinitis is also associated with allergic conjunctivitis, characterized by symptoms such as tearing, swelling, itching, burning and redness in the eyes, I recommend use eye drops, based on Euphrasia officinalis and Chamomilla vulgaris.

In the acute phase

In the acute phase, the homeopathic medicine is chosen based on the characteristic symptoms of the allergic syndrome. That is, the remedy that has a pathogenesis most similar to the acute clinical manifestations of the subject must be sought, and must be prescribed following the course of the pathology.
The allergic patient will take 5 granules in 9 CH dilution at different times of the day: upon awakening, during the day when necessary, before going to sleep and whenever he feels a worsening of symptoms, reducing the intake with improvement.
