Causes

Pneumonia is caused by infection of the alveoli or lung tissue. Bacteria, the so-called pneumococci, attack the tissue. More rarely, fungi and viruses are responsible for pneumonia. But allergic diseases, medicines and pollutants can also cause pneumonia.

Symptoms

According to the symptoms, a distinction is made between two types of pneumonia: atypical and typical pneumonia. Atypical pneumonia is viral pneumonia. In other words, inflammation caused by viruses. It begins insidiously and is accompanied by headaches, body aches and an annoying cough, usually without sputum. The temperature is below 39 degrees Celsius. Viral pneumonia rarely causes shortness of breath.

The typical pneumonia is bacterial pneumonia. It manifests itself with a sudden onset of fever, chills and a cough that promotes purulent sputum. Those affected complain of shortness of breath and pain when breathing. Bacterial pneumonia can lead to a lack of oxygen. The affected areas usually turn blue.
