How to get rid of Mites?

To avoid the proliferation of mites in our bed, in addition to ventilating the room every day, it is advisable to disinfect the mattress every now and then, in order to avoid further problems

The bed is one of the fundamental elements of our home , since it is the place where we can rest after having carried out all our daily activities. We spend a significant part of the day in bed and allow the body to perform basic health functions.

However, due to sweating, dead skin cells and dust, the mattress deteriorates and becomes a perfect place for the development of various microorganisms.

Although it is customary to ignore it, some allergies, infections and respiratory problems depend on the mites and bacteria that proliferate in our bed.

Fortunately, there are cleaning and disinfection methods that allow us to get rid of this problem without having to expose ourselves to chemicals or spend a lot.

On this occasion we would like to share with you a natural formula and some tips so that you can keep your bed in top condition.

1.5 million mites could live in our bed

Before knowing how to disinfect the bed, it is good that everyone knows that up to 1.5 million dust mites can live in it, which reproduce easily. Blankets and sheets absorb sweat and skin cells serve as food for these insects that cause asthma and various allergic reactions.

Many experts recommend letting your bed ventilate for several hours after getting up , as fresh air and light help eliminate these parasites.

After getting up, the body heat is still present in the bed and allows for an environment that is conducive to the growth of mites. All this tends to manifest itself with several evident symptoms which are often confused with other affections:

  • The nasal congestion
  • Asthma
  • Sneezing
  • Hay fever
  • Red eyes
  • Rhinitis
  • The itch
  • Skin irritations

In the event that one or more of these symptoms occur, immediate measures must be  taken to improve the environment of your bedroom  and avoid major problems.

How to disinfect the bed in a natural way?

In addition to following the advice of having it ventilated for a few hours, there are other practical means to ensure a cleaner bed and free from sources of infection. First, you should change the sheets and pillow cases at least every two weeks. It must be considered that they are the elements that absorb sweat the most.

You must also try to keep the base and surrounding environments free of dust, another allergen that compromises health. To avoid having to resort to cleaning products on the market,  you can use white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide as alternative solutions.

In addition, it is advisable to use the following natural remedy for a deep disinfection of the mattress.

Disinfectant based on sodium bicarbonate and essential oil

Baking soda is an antiseptic product which, in this case, we need to absorb moisture and dirt from the mattress. Its properties neutralize bad smells and leave a very pleasant feeling of freshness when you go to sleep.

Essential oil, such as tea tree oil or eucalyptus, is a product with a pleasant aroma that strengthens the disinfection process for a total elimination of mites. This method is 100% ecological and perfectly replaces other commercial products that contain aggressive chemicals.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of baking soda (200 g)
  • 10 drops of essential oil
  • 1 medium sized sieve
  • 1 brush
  • A manual vacuum cleaner

What do you have to do?

  • In a bowl, combine the baking soda with the essential oil.
  • After they are well mixed together, pass them through a sieve and sprinkle them on the mattress.
  • Scrub with the help of a brush and make sure you clean all areas.
  • Leave to act for at least one hour to allow the active compounds to perform their function.
  • Remove excess baking soda with a hand vacuum cleaner.
  • Repeat once a month.

Are you sure your bed is clean? Even if it has no bad odors or noticeable dirt, there is a high probability that it hosts hundreds of mites and microorganisms that are harmful to your body.

If you have pets in your home, avoid letting them into the bedroom , as the problem could worsen. Follow the advice mentioned here and verify its usefulness to keep your sleeping area in better conditions.
